Sagot :
The location of a country is usually designated by the latitude and longitude of its capital city. This is the case of the Philippines wherein Manila is the capital. Our location on the globe is 14.5995° N, 120.9842° E. The majority of the Philippines lie between longitudes 120 E and 125 E. In terms of latitude, we lie in between 5 N and 20 N.
Timezone of the Philippines
We only have one timezone unlike the contiguous United State where they have 4 timezone as the land mass spans at least 4 longitude boundaries. During US Standard Time, the Philippines is 13 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time. There was a time, in the past where we had Daylight Savings Time as well but this was not successful for various reasons. One possibility is that the time saved is not that significant as the difference in the sun setting given the longitude is not that much, compared with other nations who span more than one longitudinal boundaries.
Effect of Latitude on Climate
Because the country lies just above the equator, our climate is generally tropical with two seasons -- hot and wet seasons. The farther a place is from the equator, the cooler the temperature is.
Land Area
The land area covered by the Philippines' latitude and longitude spans about 300,000 square kilometers.
Why is Manila the point of reference?
Generally, when a country is large, the capital city serves as the point of reference. In non-complicated situations where the country or place is just small, there is no need to specifically reference the capital city. Possible examples are Singapore, Brunei, Taiwan and others.
