MEDIAN

THE MEDIAN SCORE  is the middle value in a set of quantities. It separates an ordered set of data into two equal parts. Half of the quantities are found above the median and the other half is found below it. Median also the value that separates an ordered set of data in two equal parts.

To find the median  of an ungrouped data, follow these steps:

1. Arrange the quantities  either in ascending or descending order.

2. Number the quantities consecutively from 1 to n.

3. If n is odd, the median is the ((n+1)/ 2)th quantity.

4. If n is even, the median is the mean of ((n/2)+ 1) and (n/2) th quantities.

Here is the example on how to find median;

Find the median of the following set of scores.

23, 15, 9, 30, 27, 10, 18, 14, 13

Solution: first arrange each score in ascending or descending order

1. 30

2. 27

3. 23

4. 18

5. 15

6. 14

7. 13

8. 10

9. 9

Since n = 9 and is odd, the median is the ((9+1)/2)th or the 5th score, therefore the median is  15.
