How to divide fraction

Sagot :

to divide any number by fraction:
1. Multiply the number by the reciprocal of the fraction
2. Simplify the resulting fraction if possible.
3. Check your answer: Multiply the result you got by the devisor and be sure it equals in original dividend.

example:
1/2 ÷ /4
 => 1/2 × 4/3 = 4/6       get the reciprocal
=> 4/6 ÷ 2/2 = 2/3        simplify
=2/3                            final answer

Dividing fraction is really easy, it always ends up being multiplied by each other.

In dividing, we have three parts: The divisor, The dividend, and the Quotient.
In fractions, we have three parts: may have a whole number, numerator, and denominator.

Now, recall that "dividing" is related to "multiplying"
Here are the steps for method no. 1
1. Determine the parts of the question: find the divisor, and the dividend.
2. Next, the divisor is the one who is outside the division symbol (can't identify its name), or on the right side of the obelus (÷).
3. The divisor, that "divides" the dividend by its value is our thing here. Find its numerator and its denominator.
4. Switch the numerator and the denominator, this is called the reciprocal. If you have a mixed number (meaning that it contains a whole number), you can make it a improper fraction first by the formula dw + n = n / d and then find its reciprocal by doing the same.
5. Proceed on multiplying fractions, it is done by multiplying the numerators by each other, and same with the denominators.
6. Simplify your answer if improper fraction: make a mixed number, if proper fraction: reduce to lowest term or divide the n by d to get the number, if n isn't divisible by d, don't do it.
7. Check by multiplying your quotient (the result) by the divisor (right to the obelus sign) and you should get your dividend back (left to the obelus sign)
8. Have a conclusion.

Here are the steps for MY method no. 2 (Not recommending this, but this is a great way to practice your decimal ⇔ fraction thingy)
First, recall that for any fraction a/b you can do: a ÷ b, to make it in decimal form. That is also why these two symbols: --- (used to separate the numerator and denominator in fractions) and / (used to indicate division, also in fractions) is related to each other, these to numbers indicate "division" which means that for any number a over b, it means a/b which indicates the operation: division.
1. Make the dividend, and the divisor ALL DECIMALS. This is done by dividing the numerator by the denominator.
2. After the dividend and the divisor are ALL DECIMALS, divide it by each other.
3. There you get your answer, make it in fraction form.
4. Check by multiplying the quotient (result) by the divisor (right) and you should get back your own dividend (left)
5. Have your conclusion.
The reason why my own method (IDK if someone also did this, or its only me) is the one that I use is that the answer can be in decimal form, not just on fraction.

Method 1 Ex.
1. 2/3 ÷ 1/2 = x
Sol.
2/3 ÷ 1/2 = x
2/3 × 2/1 = x
4/3 = x
1 1/3 = x

Method 2 Ex.
1. 2/5 ÷ 1/2 = x
0.40 ÷ 0.50 = x
0.8 = x
8 / 10 = x
4 / 5 = x
