Sagot :

DEFINITION:

seismic wave, vibration generated by an earthquake, explosion, or similar energetic source and propagated within the Earth or along its surface.

MAIN TYPES:

Body Waves and Surface Waves

BODY WAVES SUB-TYPES:

Primary Waves (p-waves or pressure waves), Secondary Waves (S-waves or shear Waves)

PRIMARY WAVES CHARACTERS:

Primary waves (P-waves) are compressional waves that are longitudinal in nature.

SECONDARY WAVES CHARACTERISTICS:

Shear is the change of shape, without change of volume, of a layer of the substance, produced by a pair of equal forces acting in opposite directions along the two faces of the layer.

SURFACE WAVES SUB-TYPES:

Love waves and Rayleigh waves

LOVE WAVES CHARACTERISTICS:

Love waves are transverse and restricted to horizontal movement - they are recorded only on seismometers that measure the horizontal ground motion.

RAYLEIGH WAVES CHARACTERISTICS:

It is a secondary wave characterized by low frequency and strong energy, propagating mainly along the interface of medium and rapid attenuation of energy with increase in interface distance.
