the perimeter of a rectangle, whose length is five centimeters more than its width, is fifty centimeters

Sagot :

Let width be x
Length be x + 5 (five centimeters more than the width)
Perimeter = 50 cm.

Perimeter of rectangle = 2 (L) + 2(W)
50 = 2 (x + 5) + 2(x)
50 = 2x + 10 + 2x

50 = 4x + 10  (Subtract 10 from each side of equation)
50-10 = 4x 10-10
40 = 4x
40/4 = 4x/4

x = 10 cm (width)

The dimensions are:
Width: x = 10 cm
Length = x + 5 = 10 + 5 = 15 cm

To check:

2(L) + 2(W) = 50 cm
2(15 cm) + 2(10 cm) = 50
30 cm + 20 cm = 50 cm
   50 cm = 50 cm
