Out of forty students, 14 are taking english composition and 29 are taking chemistry. If five students are in both classes, what is the probability that a randomly-chosen student from this group is taking only the chemistry?

Sagot :

The number of students in each are as follows:
English Composition - 14
Chemistry - 29
Both - 5

In order to know the number of students in English Composition only and Chemistry only it would be the number of students taking it minus 5:
English Composition ONLY - 14 - 5 = 9
Chemistry ONLY - 29 - 5 = 24
Both - 5

The number of students in the group is 9 + 24 + 5 or 38.

The probability of randomly choosing a student only taking chemistry would be:
24/38 = 12/19

12/19 is the probability.
