What causes the death of Roland?

Rotholandus or simply Roland. Was one of Charlemagne's military leader, the man who was responsible with the Breton's March. He became a more prominent figure in literature because of the  La Chanson de Roland or Song of Roland. The song of Roland is an epic that depicts the Battle of Roncevaux. The Battle of Roncevaux happened on the 15th of August 778, it happened after Charlemagne destroyed the defensive walls of Pamplona. After the destruction of the walls, Charlemagne and his army retreated to Pyrenees via Roncevaux pass. It was there where they were ambushed and were caught in a pincer by their enemies, the Basques. The area was cramped and Charlemagne's army was at a very disadvantageous position. Soon thereafter, it became a massacre and Charlemagne and the Franks were losing.

Most of the casualties came from the rearguard, since, the enemy forces attacked the Franks from behind. One of the casualties was none other than Roland. Roland was assigned to lead the rear for the retreat, unfortunately he was unaware about the danger that awaits them. The cause of Roland's death was a strike from to his temple, just like his friend Turpin, Roland, did not die immediately. Both of them spent the last seconds of their lives in bringing back the dead bodies of their comrades before they bite the dust.
