what do you think will happen to the plant if any of the parts that make up the shoot system were injured or diseased ?

Answer:

What would happen to a plant if the shoot system were injured or diseased?

Any damage to the shoot systems would cause the death of most plants through disease or normal rot.

Explanation:

Since the shoot system includes everything you see of the plant above the ground, if it gets injured or damaged (depending on the severity), will jeopardize the entire plant.

The shoot system includes the following parts of the plant:

  • The stem
  • The flower
  • The fruit
  • The leaf
  • The shoot apex

This part is important because it is the location of the plant that handles photosynthesis especially the leaves. The leaves of the plant also provide a few certain less known but important job for the plant.

Here are some of the less known functions of a leaf:

  1. Attraction
  2. Protection
  3. Reproduction

The flower and fruits of the plant handle the reproductive aspect of the plant. Fruits also serve as bribes to make animals disperse the seeds all over the place. The pollination of flowers is the first crucial step in reproduction for most flowering plants.

The shoot apex is where all the upward growth happens, a new one will grow near it if this part is injured or damaged if the plant is resilient enough.

The stem holds the entire structure that we can see, the leaves, the fruits, and flowers all depend on the stem for stability. Some types of stems are able to store food, can provide protection (spines), and in some cases even reproduction.

Just by going through those parts and functions, we can see that an injured shoot system risks losing a lot, increasing the level of damage to it is literally taking the plant closer to death. Only those very strong types like some types of Hibiscus (gumamela), Bougainvillea, wild tropical fig, and other similarly tough species can survive a total plant decapitation by just leaving the root system intact.
