what should we remember when giving first aid?

Sagot :

We know that first aids are important, but what is the ultimate goal of giving first aid?

We give first aid to provide immediate treatment or care to someone who is suffering from an injury or an illness, like a sudden heart attack, at least before experts come into the picture.

The primary aims are to preserve life, prevent worsening of injury or illness, relieve pain, help in recovery, or protect the unconscious.

But why is it important to understand and follow the basics of first aid? Because prompt and appropriate first aid could save a life. Do it incorrectly, and you could lose a life.

What are the general directions in giving first aid?

Before you give a first aid, remember to first check and make sure the environment is safe before you approach the victim. Then, introduce yourself to the victim and ask permission to help, of course, that is if the victim is conscious. Then, determine the problem so you would also know what type of help is needed. Again, if the victim is conscious, ask the victim what happened. If you think the situation is too much for you too handle, do not attempt to do a first aid if you are unsure.

If you victim is unconscious, check for pulse and if airways are clear; this would mean the nose or the mouth. Most of the time, moving the victim is not encouraged, especially if it’s a car accident, but if there are dangers of flames, poisonous fumes, explosion, etc. then moving the body cannot be helped.

If you know CPR, then start doing it. If not, do not even attempt because you could break the ribs or puncture the lungs of the victim.

If there is bleeding, apply pressure on the wound to slow down the flow of blood.

If you notice that the victim is chilling, breathing harshly, or pale, then he or she is probably in shock. Vomiting is common in this case, so if there is suspected injury, especially in the neck, roll the victim to his or her side to avoid the vomit from choking him or her. Cover the victim with blanket too.

Look for any medic alert bracelet or ID. Some people, like epileptic ones, usually carry such IDs. This will help you determine what to do or whom to call.

Do not give any unconscious person anything by the mouth. This could cause choking.

Once you have followed all the basic, call for an ambulance.

Other points to remember in giving first aid is to guarantee your safety. You wouldn’t want to be another victim. This is the reason why on airplanes, you are always reminded that if there is an emergency and you are with a child or an elderly, put the oxygen on yourself first before putting your companion’s oxygen. You won’t be able to help anyone if you put yourself in harm’s way.

Second, secure the victim and keep the victim safe by making sure you know what you are doing. If you don’t know what you are doing, find someone who knows what to do.

Third, check if the environment is safe. Remove any hazard that could cause further harm, or if the hazard can’t be removed, then move the victim away from the hazard.

Fourth, make a record of everything that you did as first aid to the victim. This is important for reference once health care specialists arrive.

Again, first aid saves lives if done properly, but if you are not familiar with it, do not attempt doing it.
