Arthur's father is 4 times as old as Arthur. After 5 years, the father is three times as old as Arthur. Find their present ages.

How to represent both with one variable, and the working equation on it.

Sagot :

Arthur's father is 4 times as old as Arthur. After 5 years, the father is three times as old as Arthur. Find their present ages.

Representation: x = Arthur's age
                         4x = Father of Arthur's age

                                 Now             Five years from now
   Arthur                       x                          x + 5
Arthur's Father            4x                        4x + 5

Equation: 4x + 5 = 3(x + 5)

Solution: 4x + 5 = 3(x + 5)
                4x + 5 = 3x + 15
                x = 10; 4x = 40

Answer: Arthur is 10 years old while his father is 40 years old.

Check: 4x + 5 = 3(x + 5)
           4(10) + 5 = 3(10 + 5)
           40 + 5 = 30 + 15
           45 = 45 (check - correct)
