- Waves that move in a horizontal manner - it usually occurs on destructive earthquakes
- Movement is similar to that of a snake - it has a zigzag motion

The following are some of the subtypes of Rayleigh waves which has distinct characteristics
- Surface acoustic wave - a type of wave that travels to all the surfaces of solids
- Non destructive wave - since this is common, it can also be experienced on the surface of the Earth and not inside
- Arrives after the P or S waves
