Moving plates are found mainly at the top of lithosphere. This is the outermost part of the solid composition of the Earth, composed mainly of rocks that are exposed at the very surface of the planet. Part of the lithosphere, is the crust and outermost layer of the mantle, and usually considered to be roughly 100 kilometers thick.
The outermost part of Earth's structure is known as the lithosphere. It consists of the crust and small portion of the upper mantle. The lithosphere is divided into a number of tectonic plates. These plates are continuously moving and interacting with one another, colliding, submerging and diverging with one another and driven by convectional forces within the Earth.
