what is physical changes

Sagot :

Physical Changes in Matter

The world is full of stuff. In Science, we call all the stuff in the world "matter." Or anything that takes up space is "matter." Like example a chair, water, table, book, paper, trees, pencil, bag and etc. Those are called matter.

But suddenly, all the stuff or matter around us can be change. And this was divided into two changes. The "Physical changes" and the "Chemical changes." But first, we must to tackle about the "Physical Changes in Matter"

You are playing volleyball with your friends. Suddenly, the ball bounces off the court and goes straight through the glass window. The glass shatters into several pieces. The impact of the ball has caused a physical change in the window glass. A physical change is a change in the way the matter looks without changing it into a new kind of matter. Or the size and the shape of the matter or also known as "appearance" has only changed but the type of matter stays the same. So it means there are changes, but it is only the appearance of the matter, but the type of matter is still the same.

The size, shape, or state of matter are physical properties. The broken window underwent a change in the shape and the size of the glass, but each piece still has the same properties of glass. No new kind of matter has been formed.

A melted ice candy looks different from a frozen one. However, by tasting the melted ice candy, you will observe that it tastes the same as the frozen ice candy. The melted ice candy is not a new kind of matter. It still tastes like an ice candy - it has only changed from solid to liquid. A change in state is a physical change.

  • Another Example: There is a tree and you cut the tree into logs. And if you cut the logs or woods into several pieces. What do you call that type of change? It is physical changes. The type of matter was the log or wood. Even if you cut it into several pieces, the type of matter is stills the same. It is just still a wood.

  • Another Example: You are holding a piece of paper, and suddenly you crumpled the paper. What do you call the type of changes that are happening on the paper? It is still a "physical changes". Because only the appearance was changed, but the type of matter which is the paper is stills a paper.

Remember: Physical Changes cannot change the type of matter. There is no new kind of matter or substance that has been formed. Only the appearance has been changed but the type of matter is stills the same. And usually, physical change can be "reversible." It means it can be restored or reversed in its original form or previous state.
