Solubility refers to the property of a solid, liquid or gas substance, known as the solute, to dissolve in a solvent. The measurement of solubility is in terms of the maximum amount of the solute which can be dissolved in the solvent at equilibrium. An example of this is how much sugar a one cup of water could dissolve. The greater the number of sugar, the greater is its solubility.
In some scenarios, substances can be soluble in all proportions, such as when mixing ethanol and water (liquid to liquid). In some instances, however, the solute is a solid, as with the example provided above.
