Not all machines have the ability to make the stitch longer or shorter. It is not the regular tension that would do that. If your machine is programmable you should see a button that has negative and positive sign with a stitches in between. On my machine I have to clear what was previously programmed. If it is not this type of machine it would be helpful to know the brand and model.
