word problem involving linear equation with solution.

Sagot :

One number is five more than twice another. If their sum is decreased by ten, the result is 22. Find the numbers.

(I'll use RESAC Form).

R : Let x = the number
     2x + 5 = another number

E : (x+2x+5) - 10 = 22

S(x+2x+5) - 10 = 22

3x + 5 - 10 = 22
     3x - 5 = 22
     [tex] \frac{3x}{3} = \frac{27}{3} [/tex]
     x = 9 ; 2x + 5 = 23

A : The numbers are 9 and 23.

C : (x+2x+5) - 10 = 22
     9 + 2(9) + 5 - 10 = 22
     9 + 18 + 5 - 10 = 22
     27 - 5 = 22
     22 = 22
